Are you looking for a new way to unwind and relax outdoors? Or perhaps you’re trying to inspire your children to discover the joy of reading. There’s nothing quite like picking up a new book and getting lost in a great story. It’s a joy that’s waiting for you to rediscover.
The team here at Impact Furniture are all avid readers. Throughout this blog, we’ll share some of their top book recommendations, offering plenty of inspiration to help you choose your next read.
We always suggest checking out your favourite second-hand bookshop or charity shop for hidden gems, but if you can’t wait to dive into one of our picks, we’ve provided links to them on the Waterstones website.
Rewild Yourself: 23 Spellbinding Ways to Make Nature More Visible – Simon Barnes
Rewild Yourself is very much a book of magic. It has 23 brilliant and simple ways to make hidden nature appear before your eyes—including Snake-Charming Spells, how to Read Secret Signs, Magic-Trousers, and how to Turn into a Swan (a sheet of metal, understanding different animal prints, waterproof trousers, and hiring a canoe, respectively!).
Rewild Yourself will give you all the tips and tricks for finding time for the wildness on your doorstep. It is perfect for families looking to get active outdoors or individuals looking to find more time for nature.
Under Milk Wood – Dylan Thomas
“Under Milkwood” is a beautiful read any time of the year, but it is magical in the sunshine on a summer morning. Written by one of Britain’s finest writers as a “play for voices”, this slim tome contains some of the finest lyrical poetry ever written; there is a version on YouTube for those who prefer audio.
Evil Under the Sun – Poirot – Agatha Christie
For Julia, “Nothing can beat Agatha Christie!” and this book, in particular, has so many twists and turns that you can’t put it down. It is peaceful. The sun shines. The sea is blue. But you forget, there is evil everywhere under the sun – so it is either going to be the best thing to read in the sun or the worst, but Julia spent the day on her DIY pallet sofa, with her head buried in this book!
This book is on Julia’s reading list for the summer – a time to relax a little and get to know the power of the mind (she enjoys delving into the psychological world). This book has been read by millions already, and it was only recently published in English in 2018, so there is no doubt that after having a look at the synopsis on Waterstones, you’ll want to read this too!
Pieces of Her – Karin Slaughter
This is one of those books that you can’t put down. “It is slow and meandering, but you are always eager to read the next chapter!” Tracey has just finished this book and would definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys a thriller with twists!
Tracey’s son is currently studying Neuroscience at University and has recommended his mother read this. It provides guidance on how to break habits. But it is not just preaching; it is intertwined with the author’s story. Tracey has been making her way through the book and is thoroughly enjoying it.
Kaylin is a big Stephen King fan, with over 30 of his books at home, but Cell is one on the reading list that she cannot wait to get to; the somewhat familiar dystopian vibe of the book makes it feel like non-fiction. To Kaylin, there would be nothing better than sitting in the sun, laying on the comfiest pillows (linked here), and diving into her favourite authors’ books while getting a tan! I guess we know what she’s been doing after work!
Our Accidental Universe: Stories of Discovery from Asteroids to Aliens – Chris Lintott
This is also on Kaylin’s reading list. As much as she loves Stephen King’s dystopian nonfiction, Space feels like a never-ending catalogue of information, with the also never-ending number of discoveries we make about space every year.
Kaylin also recommends the Pallet cushions we have available for star-gazing at night – no dampness from the grass, and so comfortable you could fall asleep under the stars.
All in all, this part of the team has an extensive range of choices when it comes to our reading lists and favourite reads, but one thing we can all get behind is the absolute joy of reading outside, making yourself comfortable and losing yourself in the joy of nature! And you might as well get comfy while you’re at it 😉
