If you’re looking at costs to have a kitchen fitted then we’d guess your cupboards are falling apart, the worktop is blown and the doors are coming off; you need a kitchen renovation, and soon. You’ve found a new kitchen (hopefully one of ours BUT it’s not that simple, because someone has to install it.

Here is our simple guide to new kitchen costs; just how much you should be looking at for a kitchen being fitted. We also have some top tips for ways to save money to bring those kitchen renovation costs down!

Kitchen Fitting Costs:

There is no hard and fast figures here. Obviously the cost of fitting an eighteen unit kitchen with an island is going to be considerably higher than a four unit studio kitchenette. Generally fitting inexpensive kitchen cabinets will be cheaper though.

Removal and disposal of your current kitchen is likely to take a day. It will also require skip hire dispose off the old kitchen. Anticipate a £90-£120 for removal and anything from £250-400 for skip hire.

Generally quotes for kitchen fitting cost per unit, this covers assembly of the unit and installation of the cabinet with packaging removal. This includes framework behind units, putting up wall fittings and drilling doors for handles, expect £90-£120 per kitchen base and wall unit.

Worktop is often charged by metre, some will charge by join (aka cutting in corners). Some will also charge more for fitting marble or granite worktops as these are harder work to fit! Expect to pay anything from £100 per square metre, to £160 per join, to £1000 per worktop.

Sink and tap are fitted together generally, if you are after a hot-water tap this will be higher. For a standard sink and tap expect to pay £120

Extra Kitchen Fitting costs :

These will not always be required but if they are then here are some ball park costs for;

Tiling – Floor and Wall tiling bring together a kitchen – expect to pay approximately £15-25 per square metre.

Electrical Work – if you need it, it’s going to take a chunk of the budget. Expect costs for; extra plug sockets (£100), an updated Consumer Unit (£1000) and to replace wiring (£1200).

Gas Work – Replacing your old gas oven or getting rid of it entirely? Expect to pay £200 for replace or removal.

New Plumbing – Moving the sink location or fitting new plumb-in points for appliances? You can expect to pay £120-£170 per plumbing point.

Plastering – If you are having wall units elsewhere you might need to consider replastering walls – expect to pay £30 per square metre.

Ancillary – Always budget 10% for unexpected costs such as unexpected remedial work, extra materials or delays increasing labour costs.

Save money on Kitchen Renovation

Now this might be a lot of expenses on top of buying your kitchen cabinets. So how can you save some of these kitchen fitting costs?

The single simplest way to save considerable amounts is to shop around. Get at least three quotes from different fitters or handyman companies – take into account their reviews and if they work with plumbers / gas fitters / electricians if you need their services too!

Secondly, do not make sweeping changes to layout. Keep things the same (especially sink, dishwasher, washing machine and oven locations) and you can avoid expensive remedial work for replumbing and electrical work.

If you are able and confident an easy way to save money on kitchen fitting is to DIY. Some simple ideas as to do-it-yourself activities;

  • Removal; protective googles, a screwdriver and a solid hammer and you can remove most of the kitchen yourself. Leave the sink and oven units removal to the professionals though.

  • Disposal; if you have a car you can break up old kitchen units, cut up old worktop and take these to your local council waste centre for free. Often local authorities will offer a collection service if you have bulky appliances you cannot fit in the car.

  • Assembly; Kitchen units are a straightforward flat-pack task. By building up the carcasses yourself you can save money and leave installation and door fitting to the professionals.

A final way to save money on your new kitchen is to shop around for more affordable kitchen cabinets. Why pay extra for a flat-pack kitchen from one of the big guys when you can support our family business and save money with our in stock, high quality budget complete DIY kitchen cabinets set!
