Scandinavian style has come to encompass clean lines, raw woods, natural fibres and above all comfort. These homes are distinctly different from the clinical nature of minimalist décor. Scandi design is linked with hygge – at its core it is about creating a warm, simple, liveable home.

Scandi décor is based around several key tenets, the biggest one is functionality. Scandi design is about creating a home that works for you and your family. In essence this largely comes down to storage where and when you need it – whether ottoman storage beds to conceal spare bedding or display cabinets to keep treasured keep-sakes safe. Functional storage is at the heart of Scandi design.
Whilst functional storage is in, clutter is out – keep storage and décor light. Accordingly, clean lines are crucial and when combined with spaces which feel light you get the perfect combination – white gloss furniture. With light reflecting fronts white gloss furniture not only provides clean lines in your Scandi space but also make spaces feel extra bright and light – these can also be a perfect foil for another key aspect of Scandi design.
Scandi style is by it’s nature inspired by nature. To tap into the nature inspired Scandi feel you need some key elements; raw woods, sheepskins and natural fibres, hand-thrown pottery vases or plates and hand-turned wood objects are all perfect! These objects, unique in their construction by their nature, add cosiness and comfort to your space. Combine these natural and tactile elements into your décor to add the human touches which are so integral to the simple warmth of Scandi-décor.
Undoubtedly you are excited about the possibility of Scandi-design, now, where to start? For a weekend Scandi-refresh you’ll need to get the paint out, declutter and source some Scandi-touches.
First of all, the painting – you need a neutral background to emphasis the space and clean lines, whilst white might be tempting it can feel impersonal in some spaces, we’d recommend a warm off-white. An “oatmeal” cream or “pebble” grey all bring a neutral palette without making your space feel washed out. Our favourite shade is Farrow and Ball’s Scallop.
Secondly, it’s time to declutter. To really tap into the Scandi vibes you need clean lines and clear surfaces. Give anything you don’t need to charity, store everything else inside a cabinet or in a storage box or basket.
Third (and finally), you need those little Scandi touches – try and source these second-hand at charity shops or else from individual makers and suppliers for unique pieces. Lean into natural materials – wool and chunky linen fabrics, wood and clay accessories. Don’t be afraid to bring in some warm colours here; keep it natural with muted blues, reds, yellows or oranges.
Naturally, you are going to need some furniture for your Scandi space. Our Scandi furniture guide lines are to look for; natural wood finishes and effects, white gloss, glass fronted, LED lit cabinets and handleless fronts to keep lines sharp and clean. All of these pieces chosen as the perfect addition to your Scandi-inspired space. Of course all our furniture is FSC certified and includes a two year warranty so you know its fab furniture not fast furniture.
